EXPLORING WEIGHT CONTROL: FAT CELLS

Our fat cells are formed early in life and increase in both size and number until the end of adolescence. Calorie restriction will decrease only the size of fat cells, not the number. With a large number of fat cells formed, a return to an overfat condition is quite easy. This partially explains why adults who were fat babies often have difficulty keeping their weight down. These extra adipose cells also affect metabolism and result in the need for fewer calories to maintain normal weight than are needed by someone who generally remains at normal weight. Unlike muscle, fat requires little energy to maintain, and additional fat weight will not increase metabolic rate.
The number of fat cells in the human body grows rapidly during three stages of development: (1) the last trimester of pregnancy (in the unborn child), (2) the first year of life, and (3) the adolescent growth spurt. Fat is acquired by increasing the size of existing adipose cells (hypertrophy) and by new fat-cell formation prior to adulthood (hyperplasia). It is doubtful that new fat cells are formed after age 21 (approximately) unless someone becomes extremely obese.
There is a wide variation in the number of fat cells in different people. A nonobese person has approximately 25 to 30 billion fat cells, while an extremely obese person may have as many as 260 billion. A formerly obese adult may never be cured because weight loss does not reduce the number of existing cells, it only reduces their size.
