STRESS MANAGEMENT AND WELLNESS: MEASURING THE EFFECTS OF MEDITATION

INSTRUCTIONS: Learning how to meditate is easy. Just close your eyes and repeat the word calm or one or some other relaxing word in your mind every time you exhale. Make sure not to eat anything or ingest a stimulant beforehand. Stimulants such as caffeine or nicotine will interfere with your ability to relax. Do this for 20 minutes but recognize that no one can stay focused on a word for that long. As soon as you realize your mind has wandered, just return to repeating the relaxing word as you did before.
To measure whether meditation has a relaxing effect on you, follow these instructions:
1. Using one of the techniques presented in Lab Activity 4.1: Experiencing Stress Reactivity, determine your resting pulse rate per minute. Place that number in the space below marked "Pulse Rate before Meditating."
2. After determining how fast your heart beats at rest, meditate for 20 minutes. Be sure not to set an alarm clock since it will speed up your heart rate when it goes off. Merely look at your watch when you think 20 minutes has passed.
3. After meditating, determine your pulse rate per minute again. Place that number in the space marked "Pulse Rate after Meditating."

Most people find their heart rate decreases after meditating (or engaging in any other relaxation technique). That finding should not be unexpected since we know that one of the effects of relaxation is to slow down the heart.
