HOW CHEMICALS AFFECT WELLNESS: ALCOHOL ON COLLEGE CAMPUSES

A number of strategies have been developed in response to the problems created by alcohol on college campuses. These include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Some universities have offered dry bars. That is, bars that only serve nonalcoholic beverages. Then students can gather and meet as they do at alcoholic bars but with neither the pressure nor the opportunity to ingest alcohol. An example is the University of Maryland's Dry Dock.
2. Some universities have offered hangover-free Friday mornings that include music and dancing.
3. A national organization has formed to educate students about how to drink responsibly, how to help friends who have been drinking from experiencing problems (such as driving drunk), and how to control their own drinking. This organization, funded by the alcohol industry, is called BACCHUS (Boost Alcohol Consciousness Concerning the Health of University Students) and is now present on many campuses across the United States.
4. College theater groups have presented skits educating students regarding responsible use of alcohol. An example is Wellesley College's Alcohol Information Theater (Project WAIT).
5. Sporting and other events on campuses that once boasted of having kegs of beer are refraining from the alcohol connection. An example is George Washington University where they used to have a "Miller's Rocks this Block" party with free beer, T-shirts, and hat distributed. Now, although the beer distributors are still present on the George Washing ton campus, they no longer provide beer instead, they sponsor a super dance for muscular dystrophy.
6. On some campuses, college administrator have prohibited beer kegs at parties and re quire that food and soft drinks be served where beer is available. Such a policy was begun at Roanoke College in Virginia.
7. Universities such as William and Mary College, the University of Virginia, James Madison University, and Louisiana State University have instituted dry fraternity and sorority rushes.
8. At the University of Maryland, campus-area alcohol retailers have begun a program entitled SUDS (Students Understanding Drinking Sensibly). They distribute SUDS T-shirts and buttons, train local bartenders, and arrange for local police officers to have breathalyzers available for those drinkers who voluntarily choose to have their blood-alcohol levels tested.
