HELPING "FAT AMERICA" SLIM DOWN
Overfatness and obesity represent a major health problem in the United States. The number of obese and overfat adults and children has now reached epidemic proportions, translating into tremendous health costs to manage the numerous related disorders and diseases. Medical experts are alarmed not only at the physical, but also the emotional impact of "Fat America." Society continues to discriminate heavily against the obese of all ages in the workplace, in the home, in schools and universities, and in leisure pursuits. To date, little has been done on national or local levels to reverse these powerful trends in our affluent society. Their causes are complicated and confusing, and a simple solution is unlikely. However, you can start right now to help increase your own and other people's awareness of this serious problem and, perhaps, begin to defeat its effects.
1. First, inventory your own health status in terms of body weight and fat. Are you overfat? If so, identify and implement immediately five changes you can make in your diet to reduce your caloric intake. Also, identify and implement five exercise activities you can do every day (such as riding a bike or walking to school, swimming, sit-ups, etc.). Record your progress over three to six months. If you are not overfat, help an overfat friend inventory her or his body weight and fat and implement a similar weight-loss program.
2. Prepare a six-month program to help yourself or a friend gain 10 to 12 pounds of muscle weight. As in the program described in the previous step, be sure to include both nutritional and exercise aspects in your muscle-weight gain program.
3. Snacking is a part of most college students' lives. Nutritious snacking on high-density foods need not contribute to overeating. In fact, the right snack choices can actually help to control appetite and reduce the occurrence of snacking on high-calorie, low-density foods. What snack food choices do your college or university food service and vending machines offer? Develop a simple program to increase other students' awareness that it's OK to snack but that there are healthy snack food choices.
4. Although they are always potentially unhealthy and dangerous, fad diets that promise rapid weight loss will probably always appeal to the impatient American public. Identify and analyze several diet fads in your college or local community. Compare the diet to the key components of a safe, sound diet listed in Lab Activity 11.1: Evaluating Your Favorite Fad Diet at the end of the chapter. What are the main factors that lead you to believe the fad diet is unhealthy? Submit your findings for publication in a student or community newsletter.
5. Working by yourself or with several of your classmates, develop a survey of elementary school children in your community to determine how many of these children are or may be in danger of becoming overfat or obese. Start by collecting data on height and weight and progress to information about dietary and exercise habits. Your survey could be directed to the children's teachers or to the children themselves, but be sure to work in conjunction with school administrators and teachers. Include as many children in the survey as you can. Use the results to make specific suggestions for weight control among these children to teachers, administrators, and PTA members.
