STRESS MANAGEMENT AND WELLNESS: TIME MANAGEMENT - REDUCING STRESS

College students taking a a health course most frequently learn about how to eliminate stressors from their lives and how to manage the stress they cannot completely eliminate. What they don't usually learn, however, is how they can control the stressful effects they themselves may have on other people. Without realizing it, you too may be a stressor to many of the people in your life. Perhaps you are causing another student to sleep less soundly by leaving your stereo on late at night. Maybe you compete too aggressively on an intramural volleyball team that was established more for fun and exercise than for competition. It's possible that you are pressuring someone you are dating to have sex with you. Whatever the situation, you should be aware that the stress you make for these people is just as likely to make them ill as any other form of stress.
If you could figure out when and how you create stress for other people, you can adjust your behavior to eliminate much stress. Imagine the effect on our soociety if we all changes our behavior to eliminate much of our stress. Imagine the total effect on our society if we all changed our behavior in such a way as to get rid of the stress we were causing others!
Here's how you can make a start at this:
1. Ask people you interact with on a regular basis to list the ways that you make them feel stressed. You could start with friends, classmates, professors, and family.
2. Next ask these people to rank the ways that you "stress them out" according to severity; that is, which of your behaviors creates the most stress, the next most stress, and so on.
3. Then brainstorm at least three ways you can change your behavior to diminish or eliminate the stress for the first two items in each list.
4. Now choose the behavior change you think would most reduce the stress you create for the people around you. Try these behavior changes. If it works, treat yourself to a small gift! If it doesn't, try the other changes you brainstormed until you find ones that work.
