Exercise Maximizes Fat Loss and Minimizes Loss of Lean Muscle Tissue There is a difference between weight loss in terms of pounds and fat loss in terms of adipose tissue. A diet without exercise can result in about 70 to 80 percent fatty-tissue loss and 20 to 30 percent lean-muscle loss. With the combination of exercise and diet, fatty-tissue loss can be increased to 95 percent and lean-muscle loss kept to 5 percent or less of total weight loss.
Exercise Burns a High Number of Calories and Increases Metabolic Rate Exercise burns kcal both during an exercise session and for 20 minutes to several hours after exercise ceases (afterburn). A 3-mile run or walk will expend 250 to 300 cal depending on the individual. For the next 20 minutes (for the walker) to several hours (for the jogger or runner), an additional 25 to 40 kcal per hour will be burned due to an increase in metabolic rate.
