CLAUSES OF OBESITY: SET POINT THEORY

Inactivity and overeating are the two most common causes of obesity and overfatness. Physical activity can do much to offset weight gain and regulate the tendency to put on unwanted pounds. Weight gain of genetically obese mice, for example, is drastically reduced by treadmill exercise. In humans, extremely high caloric intake can also be offset by a vigorous exercise program and result in little or no weight gain.
Social, genetic, and psychological factors may also result in overeating and obesity. It has been found that in only a small percentage of cases are glandular or other physiological disorders related to weight problems, although many obese people blame these factors. Sedentary living and excessive eating are the two greatest perpetuators of obesity; both can be controlled.
Set Point Theory
The human body regulates its own functions with tremendous precision. Body weight is one of these functions. Each individual appears to have an ideal biological weight (the set point), and the body will defend it against pressure to change. Those who do succeed in losing or gaining weight generally return to their set point weight in a few months or years. Within 24 hours of beginning a very low calorie diet, for example, metabolic rate (amount of calories burned at rest) slows by 5 to 20 percent as a means of conserving energy, making it more difficult to lose weight. The body is convinced it is starving, and calorie conservation is a way of hanging on to the energy for a longer period of time. In addition, once excess fat cells become depleted, they signal the central nervous system to alter feeding behavior by increasing caloric intake so that the set point can be maintained. In other words, some experts theorize that an internal thermostat regulates body fat and weight and triggers an increase in food intake when fat and weight are lowered too much. Overcoming the set point is difficult. Willpower and other factors that aid in tolerating the discomfort of hunger are poor matches for a computerlike system that never quits.
Research suggests that one of the ways to take weight off and keep it off may be to lower the thermostat. Yo-yo dieting (the cycle of losing and regaining weight and fat) may have the opposite effect and actually result in a higher setting on the thermostat with the body then defending an even higher weight. This may explain why people who complete several cycles of losing and regaining 10 pounds find it nearly twice as hard to lose weight and twice as easy to gain weight on their next attempt. With each yo-yo cycle, the individual also acquires extra body fat and loses some muscle mass. Regular, aerobic exercise four to five times weekly, combined with a sound nutritional plan, appears to lower the thermostat over time and allows loss of weight and maintenance of that lower weight.
