Drug Abuse
When an illegal drug is used or when a legal drug is used for purposes other than for what it was intended, that is drug abuse. Typical drugs of abuse include marijuana, cocaine, heroin, anabolic steroids, and amphetamines. These drugs are often taken for the euphoria they produce rather than for any medical or physiological reason. Legal drugs that are sometimes abused include Demerol (meperidine), Dilaudid (hydromorphine), and Darvon (propoxyphene). These drugs are prescription pain relievers that are sometimes sold illicitly for their narcotic effects.
Drugs That Are Difficult to Categorize
Although the differentiation between drug use, misuse, and abuse may at first appear clear, a number of drugs and drug usages are difficult to categorize. For example, how would you classify the use of tobacco products? They are legal but cause the body harm. What about the use of alcoholic beverages? In this case, the amount of drug used (the dosage) might dictate its categorization. And in which category would you place the use of over-the-counter diet remedies?
