HOW CHEMICALS AFFECT WELLNESS: INSISTING ON THE RESPONSIBLE USE OF ALCOHOL

Many experts consider alcohol to be the most problematic drug in our society. It certainly is the most pervasive and might be described as epidemic on college campuses. However, there are things you can do to improve the health of your immediate environment and the wider society in which you live as it relates to alcohol. For example:
1. Support alcohol-free parties and gatherings on your campus. Suggest several nonalcoholic beverages that could be served instead of beer, wine, or hard liquor. If some alcoholic beverages are nevertheless going to be served, suggest snacks that aren't salty and, therefore, don't increase thirst.
2. Whenever going out with friends to a place where alcohol is served, insist that the person driving not drink. If no one else volunteers to be the designated driver, you assume the role.
3. During discussions by politicians about budget matters—local, state, or national—advocate that
revenue be raised by increasing taxes ("sin taxes") on alcohol. That will have the effect of both discouraging the excessive use of alcohol and of placing the responsibility for funding the health care system on a segment of the population that can be expected to use it more often.
Encourage campus administrators to meet with local bar owners to educate them about their responsibilty for actions by students who become inebriated in their bars. Request that bar owners and bartenders refuse to serve alcohol to someone who has obviously had too much to drink.
Educate any pregnant relatives or friends about the potential effects of alcohol consumption on the health of the fetus.
Support politicians who advocate sufficient funding for alcohol treatment and alcoholism prevention programs.
